A clear status report improves operation efficiency

The bio product facility at Äänekoski is the largest wood processing facility in the northern hemisphere. One essential part of the facility's operation is the ultra-modern control room, where all wood processing operations are visualized on a large video wall.

An encompassing general view of the facility's operation

The video wall is used for monitoring production processes and automation as well as video surveillance. When the equipment was set up and the first views came out, it became clear how much easier following large amount of information was now, says the control room staff. The video wall consists of 12 55" displays that are installed in a upright position, design for 24/7 use. The displays were installed in an arc according to the operators' workstations. The way they were installed and the 180° view angel made seeing everything from every station possible.

A fast reaction and status reports from events

Operators can create and save different views to the video wall as well as change the contents between them easily. For example in the event of an alert, the view is quickly switched from the general view to the detailed production process or video surveillance view in order to get the best picture of what is happening. The control room staff is then able to react to the alert fast, effectively and the right way. Every operator in the control room can see an encompassing general view of the wood processing operations. In case of a problem, a status report is quickly presented and it is then easy to get started. In this way, you can save time and avoid unnecessary fumbles.

Collecting data from different systems securely

Data is collected to the video wall from facility's different systems. ”Information security is an essential part of our overall operation. For this reason, we had to make sure that the system being implemented is secure but still able to collect and present data in real time.” Elkome's video wall system works independently separated from the factory network and the automation system. Data is "captured" from the display signals of different systems and is assembled on the server to be presented on the video walls.

A turnkey delivery for the video wall system

Elkome delivered the video wall system to Metsä Fibre Oy's bio product facility at Äänikoski with co-operation from Andritz. The turnkey delivery included the displays, the stands, the software and the video wall server - All assembled and configured and ready for use.
