Improving customer satisfaction by 24/7 self-service

Lakeuden Etappi Oy is responsible for arranging waste management in the area of its eight owner municipalities and 130,000 inhabitants in Southern Ostrobothnia in Finland. The company's goal is to provide a comprehensive waste management service for the benefit of its customers and the environment. The company is an active developer in its industry and wants to commit to continuous improvement in customer service and customer satisfaction. In the summer of 2021, Lakeuden Etappi opened a 24/7 self-service recycling station, RE-point, in Seinäjoki after hearing its customers about the development of services.

Customer guidance with information displays

Elkome delivered information displays for customer guidance to Lakeuden Etappi's new recycling station in Seinäjoki. A prerequisite for a functioning self-service is clear instructions for operation in the station.

- Almost 80% of our customers carry out waste sorting at the recycling station as self-service, even though personal service is available. The RE-point is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is absolutely essential that every customer is able to do business at the station smoothly and safely, and to recycle their waste correctly, says Anna Mäntylä, Service Manager at Lakeuden Etappi Oy.

Information displays for year-round outdoor use

The recycling station has a total of 10 information displays installed at the gates of the recycling station and in the covered recycling hall. Due to the year-round outdoor use, the information displays had to be protected from water and dust, they had to withstand the heat of summer and the cold of winter, and had a durable structure in a public place due to possible vandalism or other damage.

- The requirement for information displays was reliability in demanding operating conditions. The record-breaking hot summer didn’t pose a problem, even though the outdoor displays are in direct sunlight at the area’s gates. The information displays have withstood all weather conditions well, says Mäntylä about the durability of the equipment.

Inexpensive product design and manufacturing

Lakeuden Etappi carried out the acquisition of the information displays as a public tender.

- We were looking for a product to offer from our various suppliers, but due to challenging requirements and price pressure, we ended up to designing and manufacturing a suitable solution for the customer by ourselves. We have previously implemented several information kiosk and information display solutions for the needs of waste management and other public services and industry. Lakeuden Etappi's project showed that the product tailored to the customer met the needs and was also the most affordable option, concludes Elkome's Product Manager Henri Winter about the success of the customer delivery.
