Process and operation visualization with Video Wall System

Metsä Fibre's bioproduct factory in Äänekoski is the largest wood processing facility in the northern hemisphere. One significant part of the factory's process is the state-of-the-art control room for wood processing, where the processes and functions of wood processing are visualized on a large video wall.

A comprehensive overview of the factory's operations

With the help of a video wall, the production process, automation and video surveillance can be monitored at the same time. The video wall consists of 12 vertically installed 55" video wall screens designed for 24/7 control room use. The screens were installed in the arch according to the workstations of the operators. The installation method and the nearly 180° viewing angle enable viewing of all content from each operating point on the entire wall area.

- Once the hardware was put into operation and the first views were created, it became clear how much easier it was to monitor a large amount of data, say members of the control room staff.

Quick response and a snapshot of events

Operators can create and save different views on the video wall and easily switch the displayed content between them. For example, in the event of an alarm, the view is quickly changed from a general view to a detailed part of the production process or video surveillance to obtain the best possible situational picture. The control room staff is thus able to react to the alarm quickly, efficiently and as required by the situation.

- Each operator in the control room sees a comprehensive overview of the wood processing process. In problem situations, a good situational picture of the event is quickly obtained, which makes it easy to take action. This saves time and avoids unnecessary distractions.

Collecting content securely from different systems

Content from several different factory systems is collected for the video wall. Elkome's Video Wall System works independently from the factory network and the automation system. The content for the video wall is "captured" from the display signals of different systems and assembled on the server to be presented on the video wall.

 - Information security is an important part of comprehensive operations for us. Because of this, it was necessary to ensure that the implemented system is data secure, while still enabling the collection and presentation of data in real time.

Video Wall System as a turnkey delivery

Elkome supplied Metsä Fiber Oy's bioproduct factory Äänekoski with a Video Wall System for monitoring wood processing in cooperation with Andritz. Turnkey delivery included video wall displays, mounting brackets, software and a video wall server - All installed and configured ready for use.
